Located in Salita Pontecorvo 46, in the Avvocata district of the historic city center of Naples, Scugnizzo Liberato is a laboratory of mutual support born on the 29th of September 2015, thanks to the grassroots reappropriation of the former G. Filangieri juvenile prison (formerly a convent), abandoned since 1999, by the network of activists and inhabitants Scacco Matto.
Today the Scugnizzo is animated by an open, horizontal and inclusive community that rejects every form of fascism, racism, sexism, exploitation and marginalization. The community of inhabitants which self-govern the commons conducts a daily work of care and regeneration of the spaces of the former prison and organizes several educational, cultural and social activities inside the structure.

Since 2016, the Scugnizzo Liberato is one of the self-managed spaces recognized as emerging commons of civic and collective use by the Municipality of Naples. The community of inhabitants that takes care of the space is engaged in four main areas of activity: that of self-government and experimentation with alternative economies; independent cultural production; self-recovery and participatory architecture; mutualism and community-making.

What are the activities of the Scugnizzo Liberato?
Over the years at the Scugnizzo hundreds of initiatives have taken place, including concerts, shows, art festivals, book presentations and much more. In the space there is a coexistence of heterogeneous activities, with a cultural, social, productive and sporting vocation. Inside the structure there are indeed a theater, a popular gym, a social canteen and a solidarity wardrobe (organized by the Nessuno Escluso association) shared working spaces and artisanal workshops, a space of mutual support for parenthood, a library, an archive, a garden, a courtyard for children to play.

The boys and girls of the Spartak San Gennaro train on the football field of the Scugnizzo Liberato. This is a popular football school project born in the Montesanto district, based on a different idea of sport: accessible to all, based on the values of solidarity, self-management and anti-racism. Such project is the result of the cooperation between the Scugnizzo Liberato of other mutualistic organizations active in the area, such as the Sgarrupato and the DAMM.
The two main artistic experiences born within the Scugnizzo are the NaDir music festival, organized in recent years by the collective of the same name, and the Mediterranean festival of comics and self-printed productions UE’ Fest.

Finally, in the Scugnizzo Liberato the world of urban commons met that of popular street football. The two editions of the Scugnizzo Cup five-a-side football tournament were born from this meeting.

Every Saturday the community of the Scugnizzo Liberato reunites in a self-management assembly, in which all the decisions are taken. It is possible to take part to it if you want to get to know some of the projects carried out in the structure, propose new ones, or simply share spaces and activities with a heterogeneous and supportive community.
